A 320-meter-high peak towering above the villages of Travliata and Peratata, the Venetian Castle of Saint George is deeply tied to the history of Kefalonia! Showcasing a polygonal shape and covering an area of about 16,000 square meters, the castle’s origins date back to the 12th century during the Byzantine era before falling into the hands of the Turks and finally blossoming into what it is today under the Venetian rule during the early 16th century.
3
Excavated in the early 1990s by Lazaros Kolonas, these are the largest vaulted Mycenaean tombs in the area of the Ionian Islands, with a height of 3.95 meters and a diameter of 6.8 meters. There is evidence that this tomb was built on another, smaller tomb as the stone used in the earlier tomb had been incorporated into this one.
The tombs had been ransacked previously and the domed chamber smashed. The objects found there – jewelry, figurines, gold – not only suggest that the tombs were for the wealthy but also that the area was a flourishing Mycenaean center around 1350 BC.
4
Visit the beautiful resort of Skala known for its natural beauty and unspoiled green landscape.
There you will have free time to stroll around this beautiful village, drink a coffee, shopping or enjoy a lunch.
5
On the edge of Skala village and near the beach lie the remains of a rural Roman Villa. Based on the conducted research, it was constructed during the 2nd or 3rd century AD and belonged to a prosperous Roman. It is the most important site of Roman origin in Kefalonia.
The ruins of six spaces have been revealed, including the courtyard, and on the floor, one will notice some interesting mosaics. One of them depicts a man who is about to sacrifice a bull on an altar.
It seems that a fire destroyed the villa sometime centuries ago, while in the early Christian times, a church was constructed on top of part of it. The owner of the land accidentally discovered the existence of the villa, and subsequently, excavations began in 1957.
